OpenAI has just launched a ground breaking update to its ChatGPT platform, introducing a powerful new personal assistant feature known as the ChatGPT Agent, which will see the generative AI go from a conversational tool into a proactive digital assistant that can interact with files, browse the web, manage calendars and even operate software applications like spreadsheets and presentations.
What Is the ChatGPT Agent?
At its core, the ChatGPT Agent is a unified system that blends the strengths of OpenAI’s previous tools, like Operator (which could interact with websites) and Deep Research (which could analyse and summarise information). Now, these capabilities are integrated into a single, intelligent assistant that can think, act and adapt to user needs in real time.
Imagine asking your assistant to:
Scan your calendar and brief you on upcoming meetings.
Research competitors and generate a slide deck.
Plan a dinner party, shop for ingredients, and book a reservation.
The ChatGPT Agent can do all of this autonomously, using a virtual computer to navigate websites, run code and deliver polished outputs - all while keeping you in control.
Safety First: You’re Always in Charge
OpenAI has emphasized that user control and safety are paramount. The assistant will always request permission before taking any irreversible or sensitive action, such as making purchases or deleting files. The ChatGPT Agent is now available to users on the Pro, Plus and Team plans, though it’s currently not launching in the EU due to regulatory considerations. Users can activate the assistant via the tool’s dropdown in any ChatGPT conversation by selecting “agent mode.”
